Council Data Project (CDP) is an open source web application that pulls public records data from city and regional governments, and allows constituents to track and analyze council meeting recordings.
As a product designer, I worked with the team to identify challenges and opportunities, and develop user flows and interfaces to serve primary user needs.
A core pain point addressed by the platform is the need to sift through hundreds of hours of meeting transcripts to identify discussion threads and keep up with the evolution of legislation.
The platform takes advantage of Natural Language Processing (NLP) techniques to analyze meeting transcripts and pull out relevant key words. These can then be linked to specific time codes in the videos to drive a Search and Browse interaction model.
As a result the platform serves both a "Hawk" persona type with specific interests and a need for close data analysis, as well as a more casual "Community" user exploring topic trends overall.
