Mobile product design and prototype

Energy NewsData is a critical information service for the West Coast energy industry, providing market analysts with the insights they need to effectively buy and sell wholesale power between energy districts.

I first began working with Energy NewsData as a UX consultant in 2017. My role was to develop a digital transformation plan to transition a PDF newsletter service to mobile web delivery.

Original PDF newsletters

User feedback and analysis show overwhelming support for moving to digital, especially on mobile

SWOT analysis

User interviews showed that analysts often work in trading floor conditions, and need to consume the product on their feet and on the go

Competitive audit shows widespread adoption of interactive media — podcasts are identified as an opportunity

A searchable issue archive is a major user and institutional benefit for offering a digital platform, with potential for premium pricing tiers

Building on these insights, I built prototypes for a mobile responsive web product, based on translating the content of the PDF newsletters to common digital patterns.

To test the product with users and stakeholders, I built interactive mockups in Figma as well as HTML / CSS.

User journey from inbound and outbound channels to specific actions supported by the product

The outcome of this project was to translate the design and content of the newsletter product to a mobile web interaction model, with a minimum of disruption to existing user flows. In further development of this project, I would continue interviewing and testing with users to discover opportunities to increase value through interactive features, such as archive search, saved stories, and podcasts or other alternative media.Continued — I addressed the product onboarding experience through the Digital delivery campaign landing page project.
